Examples of Agroecology in Action Inspire Students at Royal Agricultural University

“They tell stories, they inspire, they educate; which are all of the things we are trying to do as a university.”

– Director of External Relations, RAU

We Feed The UK originated from We Feed The World: the biggest ever international photography collection documenting global food systems. It featured over 300 portraits of regenerative farmers and fishers by renowned photographers, reaching over 55 million people. Spotlighting the folk who feed most of the world in a sustainable way, the campaign busted the myth that we need industrial agriculture to survive and encouraged us to grow a food system that cultivates equality, justice and diversity, so that small-scale producers can continue nourishing people and planet.

This message now lives on, in lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and teaching spaces at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU). The next generation of farmers, land managers, and agricultural scientists will learn, develop opinions, and decide their pathways alongside powerful stories of small-scale, future-focused farming.

“The exhibition has transformed our teaching spaces.”

– Head of Development and Alumni Relations, RAU

“These photographs make me feel as part of a wider community. My favourite images are those of women; I find it very inspiring and powerful to see these examples in the global community”

– MA Agroecology student, RAU

As the RAU prepares students to enter into roles in the global food system, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to engage with themes of food sovereignty and agroecology, encouraging students to think critically about the future of farming, and its impact on issues from climate to communities. The university hopes this exhibition will enrich students’ educational experience by grounding theoretical concepts in real-world farming stories.

Alongside the images are information plaques, turning the vibrant images into fully formed case studies to support teaching and learning.

“I think it’s really great having an exhibition like this at the RAU because it’s about thinking forward with agriculture and it’s interesting to bring that into an educational setting where the next generation of students are coming through”

– Student, RAU

The opening of the exhibition was celebrated with a private viewing. Students and staff gathered to take a pause and immerse themselves among the images before hearing from Francesca Price, Executive Director for the Real Farming Trust and former Project Director of the We Feed The World campaign at The Gaia Foundation.
