Restoring soil on Stuart's farm in Northumberland

Unearthed: Soil Restoration in Northumberland: Exhibition Launch

National Landscape Discovery Centre, Military Road, Bardon Mill, Hexham, NE47 7AN

9 November 2024

Free event

You are warmly invited to the launch of our seventh We Feed The UK story, digging into all things soil.

We commissioned photographer Johanna Churchill and poet Kate Fox to document Stuart Johnson’s journey of restoring soil at Wharmley Farm. Stu started to naturally regenerate the soil on his family farm by brewing compost teas, introducing mob grazing and teaming up with earthworms. As a result of his efforts, Stu won Soil Farmer of the Year 2023.

Live poetry and a panel discussion between poet, photographer and farmer kick off our nine-week exhibition at The Sill.

You can also join us on a Down to Earth walk along Hadrian’s Wall to an off-site exhibition at Walltown, to see Johanna’s photographs embedded in the landscape.

Bring friends and family to experience the breathtaking images and verse, revealing the magic of restoring soil.

We are honoured to be hosting this event at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, a multi-award-winning building which offers opportunities for everyone to connect with the land.
