Flax linen textile production in Ireland

Fibre: The Exhibition

Belfast Exposed, 23 Donegall Street, Belfast BT1 2FF

6 February – 22 March 2025

Free event

On Mallon Farm in County Tyrone, Irish linen farmers, Helen and Charlie, are reviving the tradition of growing flax for fibre, as part of a patchwork of potatoes, grass and oats.

We welcome you to this free exhibition, exhibiting the work Helen and Charlie are doing to rejuvenate soil, waterways and wildlife while regenerating a heritage that promises future resilience.

Images captured over many months by research-based photographer, Yvette Monahan, will be displayed as part of a unique and textural exhibition. The event brings farm elements into the gallery space, including large linen fabric hangings and depictions of multilayered landscapes.

Excitingly, we are hosting this exhibition at Belfast Exposed. The gallery is a force for creativity; pushing boundaries, supporting new talent, and championing community for over 40 years.

Unravel the history of chemical-free flax and its use in Irish linen production through this powerful exhibition. The gallery will be open from 11:00 – 17:00, Tuesday – Saturday. Admittance is free and no booking is necessary.

We are marking the exhibition with a launch party, taking place at the gallery on 6 February in conjunction with Late Night Art Belfast. The event will feature poetry by Irish writer, performer, and lyricist, Abby Oliveira.

If you can’t wait until the launch, you can take a sneak peek at our Fibre story online now.
